10 Musings on Love for Valentine’s Day

A man and woman sitting outside make a heart shape together with their hands.

Valentine’s Day is a pretty polarizing holiday. There are those who resent the consumerism of it all and those who stress out over what to get their beloveds. We know some who feel lonely on Valentine’s, and some who really look forward to enjoying a lovey-dovey holiday.

But we don’t need Valentine’s Day to examine love. Sure, you could skip the chocolates and roses and go for a singing bowl instead, but love is an everyday wonder. Love is where our compassionate, egoless, purest self shines through.

Here are ten famous quotes about love that embody what some say is our reason for being.

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” — Rumi

“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride. I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.” Pablo Neruda

“When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.” Paulo Coelho

“This is the miracle that happens every time to those who really love; the more they give, the more they possess.” – Rainer Maria Rilke

“It isn't possible to love and part. You will wish that it was. You can transmute love, ignore it, muddle it, but you can never pull it out of you. I know by experience that the poets are right: love is eternal.” – E. M. Forster

“To love yourself as you are is a miracle, and to seek yourself is to have found yourself, for now. And now is all we have, and love is who we are.” – Anne Lamott

“Love does not dominate; it cultivates.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“I don't trust people who don't love themselves and tell me, ‘I love you.' There is an African saying which is: Be careful when a naked person offers you a shirt.” – Maya Angelou

“Love is a state of being. Your love is not outside, it is deep within you. You can never lose it, and it cannot leave you.” – Eckhart Tolle

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt.” — Charles Schulz

This Valentine’s let’s contemplate love beyond romantic relationships. Keep an eye out and see how many instances you can spot in a single day that were borne out of love.

The way a stranger holds a door open or a small smile from a coworker count! Simple considerate acts spring from our ability to accept, experience, and share the love. This is true even when negativity has influenced us to be more positive. We couldn’t identify the bad or heal from it if we didn’t know love was there to counter it. In this way, love is the source of all of the good in this world.

How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? Do you have any words of wisdom to share about love?
